How it works
Property is advertised in square feet in the US, the UK and across the Gulf, while European and most Asian listings use square metres. Farmland is measured in acres or hectares. This converter moves between all of them, so you can compare a 1,200 sq ft apartment with a 110 m² one on equal terms.
Area factors are the squares of the exact length factors: 1 sq ft = 0.3048² m² = 0.09290304 m² exactly, and 1 sq in = 6.4516 cm². An acre is 43,560 sq ft, which makes it exactly 4046.8564224 m²; a hectare is 10,000 m², about 2.4711 acres. A square mile is 640 acres (2.59 km²).
Remember that areas scale with the square of length: doubling a room's width and length quadruples its floor area, and a 10% error in a measured length becomes about 21% in area.
Common area conversions
Area factors are the square of the length factors: 1 ft = 0.3048 m, so 1 sq ft = 0.3048² m². Property listings mix square feet and square metres, and land is sold in acres or hectares.

Frequently asked questions
How many square feet are in a square metre?
1 m² = 10.7639 sq ft. The exact relationship is 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 m², so divide square feet by 10.7639 (or multiply by 0.0929) to get square metres.
How big is an acre?
An acre is 43,560 sq ft or exactly 4046.8564224 m², roughly a square of 63.6 m × 63.6 m, or a little more than half of a 105 m × 68 m football pitch.
Acre or hectare: which is larger?
The hectare. One hectare (10,000 m², a 100 m × 100 m square) equals about 2.471 acres.
Why do listed apartment sizes not match what I measured?
Listings may quote gross area (including walls, balconies or a share of common areas) rather than net usable floor area. The unit conversion is exact; the definition of what was measured varies by market and developer.
