Since iOS 11, iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. It stores the same picture in roughly half the space of a JPG, but many websites, older Windows PCs, Android apps and government portals refuse the format or show a broken image. JPG is the universal answer.
This converter decodes HEIC in the browser. Safari uses its built-in decoder; other browsers load a WebAssembly build of libheif (about 2 MB, downloaded once). Rotation stored in the file is applied, so photos come out the right way up, and the EXIF block including GPS location is not copied into the JPG. Live Photos convert to a still image; burst and multi-image files use the primary picture.
How to use it
- Drop a .heic or .heif file, or click to browse. Files can be AirDropped or emailed from your iPhone first.
- Leave quality at 90% for a JPG that looks identical to the original; lower it if you also need a smaller file.
- Click Convert. Decoding a 12-megapixel HEIC takes one to three seconds.
- Download the JPG. The original HEIC is not changed.
Frequently asked questions
Why does the JPG come out bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC uses HEVC compression, which is about twice as efficient as JPG. A 2 MB HEIC typically becomes a 3-4 MB JPG at 90% quality. Lower the quality slider, or use the image compressor afterwards if a form has a size limit.
Do I need to install anything?
No. Everything runs in the web page. On the first conversion in Chrome, Firefox or Edge the decoder is downloaded once and cached by the browser.
Are Live Photos and Depth data preserved?
No. JPG has no container for the video part of a Live Photo or the depth map; the converter keeps the primary still image only.
Can I stop my iPhone from producing HEIC files?
Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible switches the camera to JPG. Photos already taken stay HEIC, which is what this tool is for.
