How it works

Tenders, theses, court bundles and board packs usually need numbered pages. Choose where the number goes (six positions), how it reads ("1", "Page 1", "Page 1 of 12", "1 of 12" or "1 / 12"), the first number, the page to start on and the size, and a preview shows the label on the first numbered page before you save.

Start numbering on page 2 or 3 to skip a cover or contents page; the total in "of N" then counts only the numbered pages. The distance from the edge is set in millimetres, so the number clears binding margins and printer edges. Pages that are stored rotated are handled so the number reads the right way up on screen.

Numbers are written in Helvetica, one of the standard PDF fonts, as real text on each page. Arabic formats ("صفحة 1 من 12") and Arabic-Indic digits are drawn with IBM Plex Sans Arabic, joined and right to left. The rest of the page is not re-rendered, so quality and selectable text are kept.

How each format reads

Examples for the third numbered page of a 12-page document, numbering from 1 on every page:

  • Arabic labels are drawn right to left in IBM Plex Sans Arabic; choose Arabic-Indic digits to print ٣ من ١٢ instead of 3 من 12.
  • Skipping a cover: start numbering on page 2 with 1 as the first number, and "of N" counts 11 pages.
  • Continuing a series: if this PDF is part 2 of a bundle, set the first number to where part 1 ended, plus one.
  • Bound documents: a bottom-centre or outer-corner position with 15 mm from the edge clears most bindings.

How to use it

  1. Choose a PDF.
  2. Pick the position and format, then set the first number and the page where numbering starts.
  3. Adjust the font size and the distance from the edge, and check the preview.
  4. Click Add page numbers and download the numbered PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. The file is read and processed by your browser on your device; nothing is sent to a server. The PDF engine is downloaded from this site the first time you use a tool and then runs on your device.

Can I leave the cover page unnumbered?

Yes. Set "Start numbering on page" to 2. The first number printed on page 2 is whatever you choose as the first number, usually 1 or 2.

Will the number cover my content?

It can if the page has content right at the edge. Increase the distance from the edge or choose another position; the preview shows where it will go.

Can I use a different font or Arabic numbering?

Latin labels always use Helvetica, because every PDF reader has it and it keeps the file small. Choose an Arabic format such as "صفحة 1 من N", or Arabic-Indic digits, and the labels are drawn with IBM Plex Sans Arabic instead.

Does this work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. The number is drawn on top of the page image.
