Recordings made on a phone at the back of a room, quiet podcast episodes and tracks mastered at a low level are hard to hear on laptop and phone speakers. This tool raises the volume of the whole file and exports it in the same format (MP3 stays MP3, M4A stays M4A, WAV stays WAV).

Before changing anything it measures the file with FFmpeg's volumedetect filter, so the result can tell you the original peak and average level. You then choose: a fixed boost in decibels, peak normalisation (the loudest sample is raised to −1 dBFS, the maximum without distortion) or loudness normalisation to −16 LUFS with FFmpeg's EBU R128 loudnorm filter, which suits spoken word. With a fixed boost, a limiter catches peaks that would go over full scale; if you turn it off, the result warns you by how much the audio clips. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.

How to use it

  1. Drop the audio file (MP3, M4A, AAC, WAV, OGG, OPUS, FLAC or WebM).
  2. Choose a method: a fixed boost in dB, peak normalise or loudness normalise.
  3. For a fixed boost, set the gain and keep "Prevent clipping" on unless you want the raw gain.
  4. Click Apply, read the note with the measured levels, preview the result and download it.

Frequently asked questions

How much louder is +6 dB?

+6 dB doubles the signal amplitude, and people perceive roughly +10 dB as "twice as loud". A boost of 6-10 dB is enough for most quiet recordings.

What is clipping and why should I avoid it?

Digital audio cannot go above 0 dBFS. Samples pushed past that are cut flat, which sounds like crackling distortion on loud parts. The limiter reduces just those peaks so the rest can be louder.

Peak or loudness normalisation: which one?

Peak normalisation keeps the dynamics exactly and is safe for music. Loudness normalisation targets how loud the audio sounds on average, which makes several voice recordings or podcast episodes consistent. It may lower a file that is already loud.

Will the quality change?

Lossy formats (MP3, M4A, OGG, OPUS) are re-encoded at the bitrate you choose, so pick one equal to or higher than the original. WAV and FLAC stay lossless.

Can I boost the volume of a video?
