500 KB limits are common for CV uploads on job boards, for passport and bank-statement scans in visa applications, and for transcripts on university portals. Choose your PDF and it is rebuilt at the best quality that fits under 500 KB.

How it works, honestly: each page is rendered to an image and the PDF is rebuilt from those images. That is what allows large reductions without uploading anything, but the text in the result can no longer be selected, searched or copied, and links and form fields are removed. It is the right choice for scanned documents and for uploads to portals with a size limit; keep the original for everything else.

Half a megabyte leaves room for a multi-page scan at a resolution where normal print stays easy to read; the result reports the resolution used so you can check. If your CV is a text PDF exported from Word, try uploading it as it is first: such files are often already small and keep their selectable text, which applicant tracking systems rely on.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded?

No. The file is read and processed by your browser on your device; nothing is sent to a server. You can load the page, switch off Wi-Fi and it still works.

Why is the text no longer selectable?

Browsers cannot re-encode the fonts and vector graphics inside a PDF, so the only way to shrink any PDF on your device is to turn each page into a compressed image. The pages look the same, but they are pictures. For a scan this changes nothing, because it was already pictures.

What if the result is larger than my file?

Text-only PDFs made by Word or a web browser are often already tiny, and turning them into images can make them bigger. The tool tells you when that happens; keep the original.

Should I compress my CV this way?

Only if it is a scan. A CV exported from Word or Google Docs should keep its real text so recruiters' systems can read it; if it is too big, it probably contains large photos, so remove or shrink them in the original and export again.

How many pages fit in 500 KB?

It depends on the content: plain printed text compresses far better than photos or coloured backgrounds. Try it, then check the reported resolution; if it is below about 100 dpi, remove pages or use black and white.
