How this was worked out
- The salary you entered is taken to include the 8% holiday allowance (vakantiegeld). Choose "add" if your figure excludes it.
- Annual figures for 2026 for a resident employee with no other income: taxable income in whole euros, tax and credits to the cent. Your employer withholds loonheffing per pay period with the Belastingdienst tables (holiday allowance at the special-payment rate), so individual payslips differ; the annual assessment settles the difference.

How it works
This salary calculator for the Netherlands works out your net salary (netto) from your gross salary (bruto) for 2026. Enter your pay per year, month or hour and it applies the box 1 income tax and national insurance rates, subtracts the general tax credit and the labour tax credit, and shows your net pay a year and a month, with the 8% holiday allowance included or added on top.
It uses the Belastingdienst's 2026 rates and credit tables, and it can apply the 30% ruling for expats and the rates for people at state pension (AOW) age. A salary of €50,000 a year including holiday allowance leaves €39,140.33 after tax, or €3,261.69 a month on average.
Everything is calculated in your browser. It is an estimate for a resident employee with no other income, not tax advice: a tax partner, the mortgage interest deduction, allowances (toeslagen) and credits you claim yourself are not included.

How net salary is worked out in the Netherlands
Dutch wage tax (loonheffing) combines income tax and the national insurance premiums for the state pension (AOW), survivors (Anw) and long-term care (Wlz). They are charged together in box 1: 35.75% on the first €38,883 of taxable income, of which 27.65% is national insurance, then 37.56% up to €78,426 and 49.5% above that.
Two tax credits (heffingskortingen) then reduce the tax. The general tax credit is worth up to €3,115 and shrinks once income passes €29,736; the labour tax credit rises with your earnings to €5,685 at €45,592 and then shrinks to nothing at €132,920. Because both credits are withdrawn as income rises, the real marginal rate is higher than the bracket rates: about 50.47% in the middle bracket and 56.01% just above €78,426.
- Employee social insurance for unemployment and disability (WW, WIA) and the income-related health insurance contribution (Zvw, 6.1%) are paid by your employer, not deducted from your pay. You do pay your own health insurance premium to your insurer.
- Most employers run a pension scheme and deduct your share of the premium before tax; enter it as a percentage to see its effect.
- Your employer applies the credits every pay period through the wage tax tables if you ask them to (loonheffingskorting); claim it with one employer only.
The 30% ruling for expats
Employees recruited from abroad with specific expertise can receive up to 30% of their pay tax free under the 30% ruling (expatregeling), for at most five years. The allowance counts on pay up to €262,000, and your salary without the allowance must still meet the salary norm of €48,013 a year (€36,497 if you are under 30 with a master's degree).
The calculator takes the allowance off your taxable pay and shows it next to the result. If the full 30% would take your pay below the norm, the allowance is lowered so the norm is still met. From 2027 the maximum falls to 27%, except for people who already had the ruling in December 2023.
Box 1 income tax rates 2026
| Taxable income | Below AOW age | AOW age (born 1946 or later) |
|---|---|---|
| Up to €38,883 | 35.75% | 17.85% |
| €38,884 to €78,426 | 37.56% | 37.56% |
| Over €78,426 | 49.5% | 49.5% |
The first-bracket rate includes the national insurance premiums: AOW 17.9%, Anw 0.1% and Wlz 9.65% (27.65% together), leaving 8.1% income tax. At AOW age no AOW premium is due.
General tax credit (algemene heffingskorting) 2026
| Taxable income | Below AOW age | AOW age |
|---|---|---|
| Up to €29,736 | €3,115 | €1,556 |
| €29,737 to €78,426 | €3,115 − 6.398% of income over €29,736 | €1,556 − 3.195% of income over €29,736 |
| Over €78,426 | €0 | €0 |
Labour tax credit (arbeidskorting) 2026
| Income from work | Below AOW age | AOW age |
|---|---|---|
| Up to €11,965 | 8.324% of income | 4.156% of income |
| €11,966 to €25,845 | €996 + 31.009% over €11,965 | €498 + 15.483% over €11,965 |
| €25,846 to €45,592 | €5,300 + 1.95% over €25,845 | €2,647 + 0.974% over €25,845 |
| €45,593 to €132,920 | €5,685 − 6.51% over €45,592 | €2,840 − 3.25% over €45,592 |
| Over €132,920 | €0 | €0 |
At AOW age the elderly credit (ouderenkorting) adds €2,067 up to €46,002 of income, reduced by 15% of income above that. Credits can reduce the tax to nil but are not paid out here.
30% ruling (expat scheme) 2026
| Rule | 2026 |
|---|---|
| Tax-free share of pay | Up to 30% (27% from 2027 for most people) |
| Pay counted for the allowance | Up to €262,000 (allowance at most €78,600) |
| Salary norm (pay excluding the allowance) | €48,013 |
| Salary norm, under 30 with a master's degree | €36,497 |
The ruling runs for at most five years and needs a decision from the Belastingdienst on a joint request by you and your employer.

How to use it
- Type your gross salary and choose whether it is per year, month or hour.
- Say whether your figure already includes the 8% holiday allowance (vakantiegeld) or whether it should be added on top; job offers usually quote a monthly salary without it.
- Tick the 30% ruling if you have it, add your share of the pension premium from your payslip, and tick AOW age if you are over the state pension age all year.
- Read your net salary a year and a month and the tax breakdown, with your effective and marginal rates.
Frequently asked questions
What is €50,000 gross to net in the Netherlands?
In 2026 a gross salary of €50,000 a year, including holiday allowance, leaves €39,140.33 net, which is €3,261.69 a month averaged over the year. Your pension premium and the 30% ruling change the figure; set them in the calculator.
How much is €4,000 a month gross in net?
€4,000 a month is €48,000 a year before holiday allowance; with 8% added the gross is €51,840 and the net is €40,051.72 a year. Choose "Add 8% on top" and the Month period in the calculator to see it with your own options.
Is holiday allowance included in my salary?
Dutch employees get at least 8% of their gross salary as holiday allowance (vakantiegeld), usually paid in May or June. Job offers and payslips normally quote the monthly salary without it, so the annual gross is 12 months plus 8%. The calculator lets you say which you typed.
How much does the 30% ruling save?
Up to 30% of your pay is paid tax free, so your taxable income is lower and your net pay higher. Turn on the ruling in the calculator to see your figure; the allowance appears next to the result. You must meet the salary norm of €48,013 (€36,497 under 30 with a master's degree) on your pay without the allowance.
What changes to the 30% ruling in 2027?
From 1 January 2027 the tax-free allowance is at most 27% instead of 30% for most people. If you already used the ruling in December 2023, you keep 30% until your ruling ends.
Why is the marginal tax rate so high on middle incomes?
Because the general and labour tax credits are withdrawn as your income rises. In the 37.56% bracket, each extra euro also costs you part of both credits, so about 50.47% goes in tax; just above €78,426 it is about 56.01% until the labour credit runs out at €132,920.
Do I pay social security on top of the tax?
The national insurance premiums (AOW, Anw and Wlz) are already part of the first-bracket rate, so they are included in the tax figure here. Unemployment and disability insurance and the income-related Zvw contribution are paid by your employer. Your own health insurance premium and any pension premium are separate.
Why is my payslip different?
Your employer uses the Belastingdienst wage tax tables for each pay period and taxes the holiday allowance and bonuses at a special rate, so monthly payslips differ from an even twelfth of the year. This calculator shows the annual tax; the difference is settled when you file your tax return or receive the assessment.
