Images saved from websites are increasingly WebP. That is great for page speed and frustrating everywhere else: older versions of Photoshop, Microsoft Office, many print services, document uploaders and some messaging apps refuse the format or show a blank box. PNG is the safe destination when the image has a transparent background, such as a logo, sticker, icon or product cut-out, because JPG would fill the transparent areas with a solid colour.

The converter decodes the WebP with your browser's built-in decoder and writes a lossless PNG, so the result looks exactly like the WebP you started with, including semi-transparent edges. Nothing is sharpened or recompressed. The PNG will normally be larger than the WebP, because WebP was designed to be smaller; that is expected and does not mean anything went wrong.

Animated WebP files are converted from their first frame, since PNG is a still-image format here. If what you actually need is a JPG, for example for a form that rejects PNG, use WebP to JPG instead. All work happens on your device and the file is never uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Will the transparent background survive?

Yes. PNG stores full transparency, so transparent and semi-transparent pixels from the WebP are kept exactly.

Is there any quality loss?

No new loss. PNG is lossless, so the output is identical to the decoded WebP. If the WebP itself was saved at low quality, those artefacts remain.

Why is the PNG larger than the WebP?

WebP compresses much more efficiently than PNG. A PNG two to five times the size of the WebP is normal.

What happens to an animated WebP?

Only the first frame is converted. For animations, a video or GIF tool is the right choice.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Any current mobile browser can decode WebP and write PNG, and the download goes to your usual Downloads folder or Files app.
